Godeater Album Review

Artist: Godeater

Album Title: Vespera

Release Date: September 30th, 2022

Score: 8/10

First Impressions: This album had alot of build up moments that reel you in and trap you. The opening track 'Self Surgery' is a stand alone track with heavy riffs, pounding drums and just enough drama to grab onto your curiosity. The overall tone of this is refreshing, and beyond clean. You can tell they did not play games about the production and mixing of this release. Each track kind of seeps into the next, so listening to them out of order might result in slight whiplash. The pauses are well placed, the harsh vocals are cohesive and right in the pocket in terms of pitch. And when they slow it down and drag out the beat a little, like on the track 'Silhouette', perfection.

Likes and Dislikes: One of my favorite moments in the entire album is the echoing choir at the beginning of 'Out of Body'. It really elevated the band's efforts to turn out a kickass collection of tracks. The cleans were a tiny bit pitchy but still fit well with the screaming vocals surrounding them. I had wished for a few different key changes or a smidgen more dynamics, yet the entire release was extremely satisfying.

Favorite Tracks: Out of Body, Backwash, God Complex

Wrap-up:

The boys in Godeater put soul into this album. It is undeniably a deathcore/death metal album, but Vespera is an experience in and of itself; it's heavy with a purpose. It's dramatic in the best way possible, and still crashing and powerful. Well done.
